Earth Hour US - Supporting Organizations

From building managers to educators, churches to science museums, organizations across America are lending their support and telling their members about Earth Hour. Check out these groups that are all helping America "turn out" on March 29!


MySpace.com's millions of members around the world are getting the Earth Hour message thanks to a unique promotion on MySpace's OurPlanet page. OurPlanet is featuring the national Earth Hour video narrated by Jeremy Piven, videos created by other users and a range of Earth Hour content, and MySpace has made WWF a Featured Organization. Social networking changes the world!

The universally recognized search engine will highlight Earth Hour on their homepage from 8-9 on March 29.


Thinkfinity.org, the Verizon Foundation's online educational tool used by millions of teachers, parents, students and afterschool programs, is launching its new ThinkGreen content this month - and their new site features Earth Hour’s elementary school activity kits, along with WWF's high school-level climate change curriculum. Coupled with content from National Geographic, these Earth Hour materials will help millions of educators and families learn more about how we can work together to find solutions to climate change.


The Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) with 540 member science centers and museums across the U.S. and around the globe, is partnering closely with WWF's Earth Hour. There are many natural connections to Earth Hour for ASTC member institutions, especially through IGLO, an ASTC project on the occasion of International Polar Year (March 2007-March 2009) designed to raise worldwide public awareness about global warming and the importance of the polar regions. ASTC members are distributing Earth Hour information to visitors, reaching out to local business and officials, and hosting events on March 29th - like a stargazing party at Phoenix's Arizona Science Center.


Where I've Been, "the travel industry's leading social networking application," is supporting Earth Hour 2008 by spreading the word with an online Earth Hour advertisement and encouraging users to take a stand against climate change. The Weather Channel is supporting Earth Hour through ads aired on local Weather Channel sations and a 30-minute feature, highlighting the event. They will also be aking part by turning off non-essential lighting at their world headquarters.






The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people since 1970. EPA Region 5 is promoting Earth Hour on its website and has officially signed up as a supporter in order to magnify the need to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Midwest and Great Lakes states.


Across the nation, Cox Enterprises' local properties are turning off lights to take positive action against climate change. Many of Cox's media companies are running Public Service Announcements and advertisements to encourage citizens in their local markets to get involved. As an overall company, Cox has provided more than $200,000 in media support and is participating in nearly 30 different locations - including each of Earth Hour's four flagship U.S. cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco).


The National Education Association (NEA), the nation's largest professional employee organization, plans to darken its Washington, DC, headquarters on March 29. Teachers, community college professors, counselors, speech pathologists, bus drivers, secretaries, retired educators and student teachers that are members of NEA and of its state affiliates, are also getting the resources they need (including Earth Hour lesson plans for grades K - 6) to raise students’ awareness of how our energy use, daily activities and climate change can affect the future of the planet.

The Newspaper Association of America Foundation (NAAF) is spreading the word about Earth Hour through the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program, a cooperative effort between schools and newspapers across the nation. NAAF's support has lead to local newspapers across the country planning special inserts and sections on Earth Hour leading up to the event.


Youth Service America, a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, is reaching out to its members with Earth Hour information and encouraging them to participate on March 29th.


Evangelicals for Social Action (ESA) is a community of Christians committed to living out their walk with Christ holistically–that is, with the whole of their lives. Dr. Lowell "Rusty" Pritchard, the National Director of Outreach for the Evangelical Environmental Network and the editor of Creation Care magazine, will feature Earth Hour in the ePistle, the ESA's weekly electronic communiqué.


Earth Hour coincides with the National Science Teachers Association's national conference in Boston. Members attending the conference of the largest organization in the world committed to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all will be encouraged to demonstrate their individual commitment to fighting climate change during Earth Hour.


In its quest to encourage responsible lighting and save natural resources, the Astronomical League invited its more than two hundred and forty local amateur astronomical societies from all across the United States to participate in Earth Hour.




Turning out lights will save energy and benefit migratory birds, particularly if lights are turned out for the duration of the night in tall buildings and cities during Spring and Fall migration. The American Bird Conservancy supports Earth Hour and has encouraged its members and others to do the same – including linking to Earth Hour’s website on their homepage, www.abcbirds.org.
