ONE WEEK, ONE HOUR!

Make Friends in the Dark

Got any eco-savvy friends? An uncle who recycles everything? Or neighbors you've wanted to meet but you've never needed to borrow sugar? Earth Hour is the perfect chance to make connections and do something positive with friends. Invite them to your Earth Hour party, get them to help you ask local leaders to host a citywide Earth Hour event, or just talk to them about how they think your community could be greener. There's nothing like a global call to action to build friendly connections – and this is your chance to take the lead and help get more people to "turn out" on March 29! For more info on how to build community support and organize your own Earth Hour event, check out our handy Community Kit.

Earth Hour Atlanta

It's official! On Monday, March 17th, Atlanta's City Council presented a formal Proclamation recognizing Earth Hour and the city's commitment to make a difference.

Even the Fire Department is on it. To ensure that everything goes smoothly during Earth Hour, Atlanta's Fire Department has provided some helpful tips to stay safe in the dark.

It gets even better–the Braves have signed on! The famous Turner Field is turning off for Earth Hour and will include Earth Hour materials in all game day press info. What's more, the players will pose for photos in Earth Hour t-shirts to show their support. Talk about eco-llector's items!

Earth Hour Chicago

The numbers keep on climbing in Chicago; now, the city's got more than 385 participating organizations, businesses, and landmarks. That's an increase of 105 participants in just one week! Motorola and NikeTown have signed up. So have the Museum of Contemporary Art and Shedd Aquarium. Chicagoans are turning out for Earth Hour in force, ensuring an extraordinary event on March 29th. Keep 'em coming!

Earth Hour San Francisco

The Parks service in San Francisco is offering nature hikes on Alcatraz on March 29. The Golden Gate Bridge and Ghiradelli Square will be joined by landmarks all around the City by the Bay. Restaurants across the city will be hosting candlelit dinners, including Bistro Boudin – the creator of San Francisco's Original Sourdough French Bread – which will also be turning off its signature red neon sign. The Building Owners and Managers Association has thrown tremendous support behind Earth Hour, and dozens of downtown buildings including 101 California will "turn out" for the event. Parc 55 Hotel and The Westin San Francisco Market Street are both turning off their non-essential lighting and asking their guests to do the same. And the news is getting around – media from the San Francisco Chronicle to KCBS radio are spreading the word!

Earth Hour Phoenix

Earth Hour Phoenix hits the air waves! After last week's press conference, where Mayor Gordon, City Council members, and representatives from utility companies and WWF showed their support by speaking out, Earth Hour turned up everywhere: Phoenix's top-rated radio and morning shows, Univision, Telemundo, NPR, and Fox Sports Arizona all ran stories.

And the word continues to spread. The city's former mayor will be getting involved by passing out CFLs to local residents in the coming days. Like so many others in Phoenix, he is encouraging his community to change the future by changing a light bulb. What a bright idea.

Earth Hour Across America

More communities, businesses and organizations are joining up every day!

In Phoenix, local bartenders will be serving "eco-tinis" during the event. And our new "I'm Not Afraid of the Dark" stickers (download it here!) are being handed out to schools in Chicago and Atlanta.

"You don't have to make a dramatic lifestyle change," Columbia, Missouri Mayor Darwin Hindman told local newspapers. "But you can make some small lifestyle changes that cumulatively can make a difference."

Small, medium and large cities are joining Earth Hour nationwide: Asbury Park, NJ; Norman, OK; Arlington, VA; Falmouth, MA; Concord, MA; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Northampton, MA... to name just a few.

"One person committed to reducing energy consumption can make a difference," says Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, in a letter urging his residents to take up the Hour. "Millions of us working together can change the world."

Changing the world, one city – one hour – at a time.

Earth Hour Around The World

Just to the north, Earth Hour is spreading like wildfire. Much of Toronto is ready to set the switch to "off." The capital city of Ottawa is fully on board. And some places across Canada that are usually in the dark are looking for even more places to trim. The Cineplex movie theater chain will turn off non-essential lights in lobbies and on marquees at more than 130 theaters.

And more global cities are joining every day – including Dubai in the United Arab Emirates!

High Resolution

Whereas energy conservation is a shared goal of individuals, businesses and government, and;

Whereas turning off unnecessary lighting is an effective means of drawing attention to the issue as well as reducing energy consumption, and;

Whereas every city has an interest in promoting energy conservation for the good of its citizens and;

Whereas our city encourages businesses and individuals to join in this effort;

Therefore be it resolved that March 29, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. is declared EARTH HOUR and unnecessary lighting will be turned off for one hour in all city facilities.

Thanks to the Earth Hour citizens of LaGrange, Texas, to Mayor Janet Moerbe, and the many other cities and city mayors who have committed to support Earth Hour. Is your city so resolved?
