Businesses are signing on from Key West to Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Schools are joining up in Lake Charles, Louisiana; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Dayton, Ohio and Slinger, Wisconsin. Girl Scouts will mark Earth Hour in Connecticut, Illinois and Arizona. People in smaller cities are joining in: Concord, Massachusetts and LaGrange, Texas. One Illionis city issued a proclamation "recommending to the residents and businesses of Homer Glen to participate by turning out non-essential lights from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m" on March 29. No "second city" here. Chicago was the first city to become an official Earth Hour flagship partner. Mayor Richard M. Daley, Eric Dinerstein of World Wildlife Fund, Anne Pramaggiore, vice president of ComEd, Michael Cornicelli, vice president of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago and Tom Bernardin, CEO of Leo Burnett Worldwide joined others for a Feb. 15 kickoff news conference at Navy Pier. "An important part of Chicago's efforts to be the most environmentally-friendly city in the world is to understand the effects of climate change on our city," said Chicago's Mayor Richard M. Daley. "Programs like Earth Hour 2008 remind us that we all share the responsibility for global warming, and we all can be part of the solution." The San Francisco Giants will feature the Earth Hour video on their giant stadium scoreboard during their March 27th and 28th pre-season (and pre-Earth Hour!) games. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin wants to leave her city's residents in the dark. But just for an hour. "I call on citizens and business leaders across Atlanta to support Earth Hour," Mayor Franklin said.
